For years, the section of Interstate 26 between Ashley Phosphate Road and the Mark Clark Expressway (I-526) has been the worst traffic bottleneck in the Lowcountry.

To solve this problem, the South Carolina Department of Transportation awarded one of its largest construction contracts to date. The project team, led by U.S. Group, Inc., the prime contractor, will be responsible for widening the Interstate and rebuilding interchanges at Aviation Avenue and Remount Road.

The first major portion of the project - the reconstruction of the Remount Road interchange - is complete. Remount Road was re-opened to traffic several weeks ahead of the deadline for that phase of the project, and the two new ramps on the west side of the interchange are now open.
