After nearly three years of road work, lane closures and construction the I-26 project is on its last leg.

Wednesday, the overpass at Aviation Avenue opened days sooner than initially thought. The ramps will be completed and opened when the new interstate lanes open in July, and one business owner near the exchange said he can’t wait.

“Since this has been going on, we have lost a lot of business because people couldn't find the on and off ramps,” Steve Worsham explained.

Worsham owns the RV Park that sits just off Aviation along the interstate. For the past two months the interchange has been closed.

“Them getting Aviation open is helping because soon we will have the ramps open, and then it will be perfect,” Worsham.

The overpass at Aviation is more durable, two lanes wider, with sidewalks that are also 18 inches wider. Work at Remount Road is complete. Once the project is done, the interstate will go from six to eight lanes.

The project is on schedule to finish early, too.

Construction crews will take the Memorial Day holiday weekend off. There will be no construction Friday to Monday.
