The widening and improvements to a 3.3-mile stretch of U.S. 21 on St. Helena Island is complete, and the locals are very pleased with the road's new Lowcountry aesthetics and people-friendly features.

Monday morning, state Sen. Catherine Ceips and Rep. Shannon Erickson activated the new traffic signals in The Corners area, the last major milestone for the $13 million project.

"The essential stuff is done. The lanes are open, traffic signals are working, traffic is flowing," said Earl Capps, spokesman for contractor U.S. Group.

The project area ran from the Chowan Creek Bridge to Tomm Fripp Road, creating a center turning lane and widening the single travel lanes in each direction. Work began in September 2006 and wrapped up a little more than a month ahead of schedule.

Besides the road itself, the new features garnering praise are the distinct shoulders and sidewalks. The Columbia-based contractor built 2 miles of concrete sidewalks accented with oyster shells, creating a tabby look. The sidewalks run from the U.S. Post Office to St. Helena Elementary School.
